Cancer: The Complete Recovery
Guide
|
There are dozens of cures for cancer. When Jonathan's wife, Bernadette, was diagnosed
with cancer, Jonathan realised he knew nothing about the disease. "What I needed
was a sane, personal, intelligent and critical voice that could lead me through
these contending beliefs; that could put both sides of the case and point up the
limitations of any arguments there might be. But I never found this voice. So, I
have taken it upon myself to provide this voice for others.
This then is the book I wish I had had at hand when Bern was diagnosed with cancer."
"Chamberlain has a voice that is at once humble and powerful. I like writers that
cut to the chase, and then do not skimp on the practical details... and I really
like his attitude. He speaks from the heart, but clearly wants you to use your head.
Good combination." - Andrew Saul, PhD, Doctor Yourself Website "Thank you for the
organization of a fragmented body of information. This book is now the reference
book on alternative treatments." - Jim Cole "I now can recommend your book. as 'the'
book to read. You have covered just about everything that I have read, and it took
me over twenty books and innumerable downloads to do it. The book is more precious
than gold!" - Richard Thompson, cancer patient "This book tells me everything I
want to know. Why didn't my doctor tell me this?" - Rev. Bill Newbern |

Cancer Recovery Guide: 15
Alternative and Complementary Strategies for Restoring Health
|
|
In Europe and the U.S., we have a forty to fifty percent chance of illness from
cancer at some time in our life. So what do you do if you are diagnosed with the
disease? The harshness of orthodox treatments (surgery, radiation and chemotherapy)
are well-known. Their use is widespread, but their results are not very impressive.
Faced with these options, informed patients are increasingly seeking alternative
and complementary strategies to take control of healing their illness. This book
provides an overview of those options.
Jonathan Chamberlain watched his wife suffer and eventually die--both from her cancer
and from the direct effects of the orthodox treatments she had undergone. His experience
led to a journey in search of other methods of overcoming cancer. What he discovered
stunned him. There are cures out there--dozens of them--many offering very good
chances of recovery.
In Cancer Recovery Guide, Chamberlain presents fifteen simple and practical
strategies for becoming well again. These strategies are grouped into three families--those
that relate to the mind and the emotions (did you know stress makes cancers more
aggressive?); those that address the health of the whole body (cancer cannot survive
in a tissue environment that is truly healthy); and those that focus on attacking
cancerous tumors directly.
The personal stories cited throughout Cancer Recovery Guide testify to the
therapeutic possibilities of the strategies presented.
About the Author
Jonathan Chamberlain grew up in Ireland and Hong Kong, where he lived and
worked for many years as a teacher and writer. His other books include Cancer: The
Complete Recovery Guide and Chinese Gods: An Introduction to Chinese Folk Religion
and King Hui: The Man Who Owned All the Opium in Hong Kong. His website

charities: The Hong Kong Down Syndrome Association and Mental Handicap Network China.

Herbal Medicine, Healing &
Cancer
|
From Library Journal
A certified nutritionist and master herbalist, Yance here touches on the
very broad areas of herbs, natural healing, and cancer. While critical of the established
medical community for its attitude toward natural healing, whose scientific basis
he tries to explain with extensive references, he nevertheless combines conventional
therapies with herbs, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle changes to achieve
the best results. Yance covers many topics but not in enough depth to make this
book useful for lay readers, except for the sample recipes and coverage of the natural
ways to relieve the side effects of chemotherapy. The chapters on the chemical composition
of herbs and supplements are more suitable for medical doctors, herbalists, and
nutritionists. Recommended for specialized collections of herbal medicine.ALily

Beating Cancer With Nutrition
- Revised
|
From Library Journal
This completely revised edition of a 1994 title offers up-to-date information
about the human body's own "host defense mechanisms" in the war on cancer, providing
a multidisciplinary approach to treatment based on scientific studies and clinical
experience. Quillin, a medical professional who has published extensively, has conducted
nutrition studies with hundreds of patients in formal clinical settings. He discusses
conventional therapies (chemotherapy, surgery), alternative therapies (macrobiotics,
herbal and vitamin therapies), and related factors (psychosocial health, drugs,
tobacco, immune dysfunctions). Appendixes list treatment referral agencies, mail-order
nutrition products, suggested readings, nutritionally oriented doctors in the United
States and Canada, and recipes using foods known to slow tumor growth. Written in
an easy-to-read style, this work is informative, but some sections seem misplaced
or redundant, and charts and graphs occasionally lack an identified source and are
difficult to read. Still, this useful guide to authoritative alternatives in cancer
treatment would be appreciated in public library or consumer health collections.

Breast Cancer: Beyond Convention:
The World's Foremost Authorities on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Offer
Advice on Healing
|
Amazon.com
Medical treatments seem to get more promising every year, but they also
seem to get more overwhelming. Faced with a seemingly infinite array of choices
in the area of cancer treatment, what's a patient to do when time is of the essence?
Breast Cancer: Beyond Convention is both a starting place and a steady companion
through the labyrinth of health care. Assembling writing from over 20 experts, including
Susan Love, Dean Ornish, and Rachel Remen, this guide intelligently touches on a
range of complementary therapies while teaching readers how to choose among the
possibilities for optimum results.
Chapters include essays on Chinese medicine, diet, meditation, micronutrients, and
guided prayer, which cover issues from scarring and reconstruction to soy and osteoporosis.
Each section includes concisely documented research and tips on how to distinguish
the genuine healers from the "quacks"; at the end of the book is an excellent contact
guide for information on all these topics, as well as nationwide support groups
and specialized research clinics. For purposes of either prevention or treatment
education, you'll find supremely helpful information that calmly helps navigate
the waters of modern medicine. --Jill Lightner
From Publishers Weekly
More and more Americans, especially those with serious illnesses such as breast
cancer, are turning to complementary and alternative medicine to supplement their
Western treatments. This collection of essays edited by oncologist Tripathy and
acupuncturist/herbalists Cohen and Tagliaferri (who herself is a breast cancer survivor)
is intended to serve as a guide to the alternative therapies most often used by
women with breast cancer.
The book includes dense and sometimes meandering chapters on approaches such as
Chinese Medicine, vitamin and mineral supplementation, meditation and prayer. The
authors maintain that little research has been conducted on these therapies because
of lack of funding and the difficulty in evaluating alternative medicine separately
from conventional, but that data has become increasingly available.
Although most of the chapters are largely based on research, others rely simply
on seemingly improbable anecdotes (for example, one chapter describes a patient
who recovered from inflammatory breast cancer after she began following a macrobiotic
diet). Despite its inconsistencies, women with breast cancer looking for alternative
therapies might find this book to be a good start in their own research.

Breast Cancer? Breast Health!
The Wise Woman Way
|
Amazon.com
Designed to be a resource for both women who want to maintain breast health and
those who've been diagnosed with breast cancer, Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The
Wise Woman Way draws on "women's wisdom," or the inner knowledge often ignored
by modern medicine, as a powerful tool for healing. Author Susun Weed proposes an
anticancer lifestyle, and, if cancer does enter the picture, a six-step plan for
healing (sleep is at zero, or "Do Nothing"; surgery is number six, which she terms
"Break and Enter"), with various complementary healing techniques included throughout.
Weed is careful to point out that supplements and herbs can hurt as much as they
can help, and she lists several alternative-medicine techniques that should be avoided
no matter what. The steps she does recommend--from herbal oils for breast massage
to help detect lumps early to the herbs milk thistle, dandelion, and burdock for
women with liver damage from tamoxifen--are explained clearly, sometimes with fascinating
quotes from centuries-old books on healing.
Weed will draw ire from some readers for recommending that mammograms be avoided.
She says they tend to squeeze cancer cells into the bloodstream and can't detect
cancer until it's metastatic, which are reasons enough to not have them, and adds
that women would be better off by making her suggested anticancer lifestyle changes,
paying more attention to their breasts, and performing regular self-exams.
The warnings about the dangers of electromagnetic fields, exposure to estrogen,
and organochlorides from plastics may frighten some, but Weed means to enlighten
and empower. She dedicates the book to environmentalist and
Silent Spring author Rachel Carson and poet Audre Lorde, who both died
of breast cancer. Extensive herbal resources, a solid glossary, and a thorough index
are included.
Book Description
Foods, exercises, and attitudes to keep your breasts healthy. Supportive complimentary
medicines to ease side-effects of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or tamoxifen.

How to Prevent and Treat Cancer
with Natural Medicine
|
From Publishers Weekly
This encyclopedic compendium of "natural" medicinal strategies offers encouragement
and much sound advice to cancer patients and those seeking to ward off the disease.
The authors, doctors of naturopathy, advocate complementing, not replacing, standard
therapies with alternative therapies to prevent cancer, slow its progress and cope
with the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Their emphasis is on nutrition
and diet, including vitamin and mineral supplements rich in antioxidants and heavy
doses of herbal teas and fish oil, but they also cover acupuncture, hydrotherapy
and massage. Their sober approach cites numerous medical studies, including those
with conflicting results, to back up their claims, and warns readers when natural
medicines are contraindicated or might interfere with standard medications. The
sometimes bewildering amount of information is clearly summarized in bullet-pointed
regimens tailored to specific kinds of cancer and treatment protocols, and accompanied
with sample menus and recipes to make a low-fat, low-sodium, hot-dog-free (studies
link the consumption of cured meats to childhood cancers such as leukemia) diet
more palatable. While the scientific jury is still out on the efficacy of some of
the authors' recommendations, their basic program-stop smoking and drinking, exercise,
eat lots of whole grains, fruits and vegetables-is uncontroversial.

From Library Journal
More than 35 books on alternative or complementary treatments for cancer have been
published in the last ten years, not including those on specific cancers, but this
title stands out. Besides being exceptionally well written and researched, it is
also very reader-friendly. Authored by four naturopathic physicians and endorsed
by the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, the book begins with a discussion of
how to prevent cancer with natural medicine and diet. A somewhat complicated cancer-risk
self-assessment survey appears here. The second section covers responding to a cancer
diagnosis and key questions to ask. A chapter on cancer-fighting natural products
explores what the authors call "the super eight" and includes dosages of these compounds
for specific cancers. The mind-body connection is also explored at length. The third
section, which is the most useful in the book, addresses the use of natural medicines
to help combat the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The extensive
appendixes include daily plans for preventing and beating cancer and recipes. Recommended
for consumer health collections not already possessing a recent work on the topic.

Breast Cancer and Iodine :
How to Prevent and How to Survive Breast Cancer
|
Product Description
This book is about cause, prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Breast
cancer has two phases. The first one, from abnormal cells up to carcinoma in situ
reverses with iodine. The second phase, invasion, is controlled by connective tissue
thyroid hormone.
About the Author
I was born in Selby England in 1937 and moved to and grew up in Maracaibo Venezuela.
It is there I met my present wife while she was still in utero as her mother, a
nurse, was looking after me while she was pregnant with my wife. My wife and I are
sometimes called oil babies. After getting my MD at University of British Columbia
I went on after my internship at the Toronto General to take a PhD in biochemistry
and neurochemistry at the Montreal Neurological Institute and McGill University.
After finishing my training I taught pharmacology to Medical students, dentistry
students and pharmacy in the Department of Pharmacology University of Toronto. I
also became a Medical Research Council Scholar. Due to domestic rearrangements,
I suddenly had my present wife (who had grown up with me in Venezuela) and five
children under the age of eight. At our wedding the children represented the whole
audience. Academic life could not financially support this. I moved back to Victoria,
British Columbia to start general practice. My interest in thyroid started over
15 years ago. Also I became interested in Breast Cancer among other things about
10 years ago. I strongly feel we should have theories for medical illnesses even
if they are wrong. It stimulates researchers to test the theories and more advances
can be made. Other fields of science have many competing theories such as astronomy
and physics and mathematics. I feel that medicine would advance faster if there
were more theories to test. Over the last 12 years I have formed a library of 5000
reprints and books on breast cancer, thyroid hormone and iodine.

Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine:
The Definitive Home Reference Guide to 550 Key Herbs with all their Uses as Remedies
for Common Ailments
|
From Library Journal
This is the second edition of Chevallier's The Encyclopedia of Medicinal
Plants (LJ 12/96). Although the title has changed, the format and contents are substantially
the same. Careful comparison of the two editions, though, reveals that the text
of the second edition has been revised to reflect the latest herbal research and
includes some herbs not mentioned in the earlier book, such as cat's claw. The new
edition also addresses the issues of quality control and the safe use of herbal
remedies. But as with the original, initial and final chapters address the development
of herbal medicine, world herbal traditions, and home remedies. Sandwiched between
this material is an alphabetical listing by Latin name of 550 of the most commonly
used individual herbs. One hundred key plants are given a full-page spread outlining
their habitat and cultivation, related species, key constituents and actions, research,
traditional and current uses, parts used, key preparations, and self-help uses.
In a separate alphabetical list, an additional 450 plants are covered in less detail.
A fine bibliography and index complete the book. As with all DK publications, the
encyclopedia is lavishly illustrated with high-quality color captioned photographs
and focus boxes. Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs (1998) is a similar
title directed to a different audience. Although the Rodale book addresses briefly
the medicinal uses of the listed herbs, there is a much stronger emphasis on the
horticultural and culinary aspects. Deni Bown's Encyclopedia of Herbs and Their
Uses (1995) is more comprehensive, covering over 1000 herbs, but has less information
regarding their medicinal use. Therefore, the new Chevallier volume remains a top
choice for a library reference on the medicinal use of herbs for the public, although
North American practitioners will find it lacking in the coverage of regional herbs.
Recommended for both public and academic libraries. Mary Stout, Pima Community Coll.,

550 plants, with detailed information on habitat and cultivation, parts used, active
constituents, therapeutic properties, and traditional and current uses. A special
section profiles 100 of the most common plants, featuring herbal preparations and
recommendations for self-treatment. Guidelines on growing, harvesting, and storing
medicinal plants also demonstrate making remedies for home use. In addition, accessible
text offers fascinating insight into the chemistry of plants and their healing properties,
explaining how and why they work as medicines within the body. The major herbal
traditions of different cultures- Europe, India, China, Africa, Australia, and the
Americas- are vividly described. A review of herbs from a historical perspective
reveals the connection between medicinal herbs and cultural beliefs toward healing.
